Abstract

One of the latest emerging technologies set to innovate business is a group of technologies known as the immersive technologies and these are turning into mature technologies at the forefront of innovation. There are several initial users who are realising significant gains from utilising these technologies for learning and training, visualization and remote assistance. There is growing interest from the South African mining industry to incorporate immersive technologies into the industry in order to optimize operations but there is not a lot of information regarding as to what immersive technologies are being used and how they are being used in the South African mining industry. The aim of this study was to provide insight into the state of immersive technologies in South Africa’s mining industry through the distribution of an online survey questionnaire looking to assess the awareness, knowledge and uses of immersive technologies in South Africa’s mining industry. The results to the online survey questionnaire show that virtual and augmented reality have the highest levels of awareness and knowledge and the main use of immersive technologies in the industry for learning and training.
