Abstract

The paper describes the results of FLAC3D modelling on chromitite Upper Group 2 Reef pillars, from the Bushveld Complex of South Africa. The model input parameters were determined from the results of triaxial tests performed on the rock materials in the pillars. Post-failure behaviour was simulated using the concept of cohesion softening. Models were built to determine the strength and behaviour of pillars with a width-to-height ratio of approximately two at Impala Platinum Ltd. The results of the modelling are compared to the PlatMine and a modified Hedley and Grant formula for peak pillar strength. Underground measurements are recommended to verify the model results.
